Reliable PON Optical Transmission

The PON optical transceiver integrates the optical transmitter and receiver into a compact module, providing the optical interface required by PON network equipment.

For GPON applications, the optical interface follows the physical-layer requirements defined by ITU-T G.984.2, which covers GPON optical transmission parameters, including optical wavelengths, transmitter characteristics, receiver sensitivity, and optical budgets.

A typical GPON configuration provides approximately 2.488 Gbit/s downstream and 1.244 Gbit/s upstream transmission.

Single-Fiber Bi-Directional Transmission

PON networks commonly use a single optical fiber for both upstream and downstream transmission. Different wavelengths are used to separate the two transmission directions through WDM technology.

For example, a typical GPON ONU configuration uses approximately:

  • 1490 nm downstream
  • 1310 nm upstream

The exact wavelength and optical parameters depend on the selected PON standard and module type.

This single-fiber architecture helps reduce fiber consumption and simplifies the deployment of access networks.

OLT and ONU/ONT Modules

Flexible Optical Budget Options

Different PON deployments require different optical budgets depending on the ODN architecture, splitter ratio, fiber distance, connectors, splices, and other passive components.
